The 1987 Brazilian film Vera was an adaptation of a novel by the famous Brazilian transsexual Sandra Mara Herzer a.k.a. Anderson Begode Herzer. Herzer, born in 1962, struggled with her confliced sexuality throughout her youth, winding up as a ward of the state in a mental institution throughout her teen years. After publishing her memoir in the form of a novel, she committed suicide by leaping off a busy viaduct at the age of 20.
